It Has Always Been The Soldier

It is the soldier,

not the President who gives us democracy. 

It is the soldier, 

not the Congress who takes care of us. 

It is the soldier, 

not the Reporter who has given us Freedom of Press. 

It is the soldier, 

not the Poet who has given us Freedom of Speech. 

It is the soldier, 

not the campus Organizer who has given us the 

Freedom to Demonstrate. 

It is the soldier, 

who salutes the flag; 

who serves beneath the flag, 

and whose coffin is draped by the flag, 

that allows the protester to burn the flag.

Stephen McDannell Hillenburg  was born on August 21, 1961 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He is an American animator, cartoonist, writer, producer, voice actor, former marine biologist and director best known for creating the animated series “SpongeBob SquarePants”. He was also the voice of Potty the Parrot. Hillenburg also played the ukulele on some of the original music composed for the show, including "Best Day Ever”. Stephen Hillenburg had made several "horrible impersonations" before he finally conceived his character. He intended to create a series about an over-optimistic sponge that annoys other characters. Hillenburg compared the concept to Laurel and Hardy and Pee-wee Herman.  As he drew the character, he decided that a "squeaky-clean square" (like a kitchen sponge) fits the concept.
